Sleepless in seatle review4/4/2023 ![]() ![]() In the summer of Jurassic Park, Sleepless in Seattle proved to be a box-office smash the team subsequently reunited for You've Got Mail in 1998. For nearly two hours, Ephron keeps her marvellous stars apart, a potentially dangerous tactic that works superbly. Malinger becomes their matchmaker, while the Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr weepie An Affair to Remember is always on TV and serves as a touchstone, providing the inspiration for the movie's climax at the top of the Empire State Building. Storyline two features Meg Ryan, a Baltimore journalist who hears the broadcast, recognises a kindred lonely heart and starts tracking Hanks down. His young son (Ross Malinger), concerned over his dad's state of mind, calls a radio phone-in and when Hanks himself goes on air, he pours his heart out. Tom Hanks, recently widowed, moves to a new home in Seattle where he just grieves and grieves. At its core, as long as Ryan and Hanks are looking as handsome and awards-appealing as ever, then Sleepless in Seattle has hit the right notes.Nora Ephron, the writer of When Harry Met Sally., came up trumps again as co-writer and director of this gloriously old-fashioned and unashamedly manipulative romantic comedy. Ephron disperses specifics with little care for them, there is no need to care for them. Not everyone eats a lettuce and tomato sandwich without the bread or whatever the nonsense it was between Annie and Walter that brought them together. A hugely enjoyable romantic comedy, directed by the writer of When Harry Met Sally, this attacks both funny bone and tear-ducts with equal success. ![]() There is a soulmate out there for everyone. Light as a feather and cosy enough to warrant a viewing or two in the quieter nights when you feel alone and unloved, Sleepless in Seattle will surely change your tune. Sleepless in Seattle may not hold the sharpest script but it has an idyllic charm and a lack of reality to pursuing someone whose only interaction is a brief voice note on a late-night radio station. ![]() Ephron balances the comedy with the heartbreak superbly and it is the cast that she has to thank for that. The lead portrayals are good and the supporting performers play up to the necessary hapless losers and strangers that come out of the woodwork in every romantic comedy. Love does not come easy to the two characters not just because of distance but because of bad timing, other interests and the explosion of heartfelt admissions directed toward Baldwin. The film tells the story of a recently widowed father who, with the help of his young son, starts a new life in Seattle and finds love through a chance encounter on a talk radio show. An eponymous radio station brings them together, but the time it takes to have Hanks and Ryan together at last is agonising. 'Sleepless in Seattle' is a charming and heartwarming romantic comedy directed by Nora Ephron and starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. A genuine desire to capture grief in a big style American rom-com is attainted by Ephron. Like most comedies from the 1990s, the introduction of the joke is funnier than the frequent recurrence it relies on.īeyond the jokes and the laughter is a heartfelt story.
